College of Agriculture

Fred Cholick, dean,
College of Agriculture

The Kansas State University College of Agriculture is a dynamic, student-friendly college with a diverse offering of outstanding academic programs encompassing much more than traditional production agriculture. Programs range from the biosciences to resource-based recreation and from environmental management to running a multi-million dollar agri-business. To continue to prepare K-State students for a multitude of career opportunities, we must accomplish three goals:

We must remain the agriculture college of choice for kansans

Our outstanding reputation makes K-State agriculture a school of choice for Kansas students and for those in this region. Beef and wheat continue to be regarded as core specialties in the College of Agriculture. Increasing competition from less expensive four-year programs and from community colleges threatens the influx of students to our college. To remain the college of choice, we must maintain our “putting students first” philosophy and make scholarships available to our sought-after students.

We must prepare our students to enter the industry

Agriculture is the single-largest employing industry in the United States. Every year the agricultural industry needs more people to fill science, business and communications positions than universities can supply. Our graduates are in high demand and often enter the workforce with higher than average starting salaries.

As we prepare our students for jobs in traditional agriculture disciplines, such as wheat, cattle and milling, we must ensure they understand the global implications of their work.

We must empower our faculty

The foundation of K-State agriculture’s reputation has been built by the dedicated faculty members who educate our students in and out of the classroom. Our faculty is also engaged in research addressing many issues facing farmers and communities nationwide. To guarantee our strong teaching tradition for future generations, we must make resources available to our faculty members so that they may continue to educate our students and develop solutions to issues in agriculture.
